Whakatane is a sunny coastal town in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. It is just under a 4 hour drive from Auckland and 2.5 hours from Hamilton and Taupo. The township rests on the banks of the Whakatane River and has a vibrant cafe and restaurant scene as well as good shopping. Whakatane’s population swells in the summer holidays as New Zealanders flock to the region’s many beaches. Whakatane District also has many rivers and beautiful bush land to explore. Te Urewera National Park makes up a large percentage of the district and offers some great walks through native forest and excellent trout fishing. The three major rivers that run through the area, Tarawera, Whakatane and Rangitaiki offer a great variety of water sports including white water rafting, jet boating and trout fishing. Whakatane’s main attraction is White Island, New Zealand’s only live marine volcano. The steamy landscape is covered with mud pools and sulphuric rock. Access is by helicopter or an eighty minute launch trip. Daily guided tours visit the island providing an informative geological and historical commentary as you wander across the geothermal terrain. White Island is also considered to be a top diving spot with the volcanic activity creating some unique underwater life. Whakatane is a popular fishing destination with a large range of charter boats offering both off shore and coastal tours. You can also swim with the dolphins on selected charters. Excellent beach fishing exists between Matata and Coastlands where the steep drop offs from the shore attract snapper, kahawai and many other species closer to the beach. The sheltered waters of Ohiwa Harbour are a haven for sailing, kayaking and windsurfing and home to a large population of seabirds. The Whakatane Museum and Gallery holds the history of the region which is home to a large population of Maori. There is a worthwhile trail to follow through town which tells the story of early Maori life and there are many Art and Craft outlets about including a stone carving gallery. Other places of interest include a fruit winery, chocolate factory and maze. Other Activities include horse riding, winery tours, paintball and star gazing. There are hot springs and mineral spas at Awatere Hot Springs after all the sightseeing.
